2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR, MY LOVELIES!

i hope you had a safe + wonderful new year’s eve celebration. ours was simple + low-key, which was exactly what i wanted this year. for those of you who read my personal blog, you know that i have an odd, fickle relationship with new year’s eve as a holiday in general, so i’m extra happy that it was so stress-free + satisfying this time around. i’m also happy to be spending new year’s day drinking coffee, uploading photos, watching my brother play x-box, and counting down the minutes until the 2011 NHL winter classic, which features my favorite boys this year in my favorite city. so far today has also included reflecting on the previous year, a year that started out pretty scary with my mother being diagnosed with cancer, but ended up being, overall, surprisingly fun, meaningful, inspiring, and memorable in the best ways possible. so, when i look back on 2010, i will be able to say…

…that was the year i

// discovered florence + the machine, mumford & sons, broken social scenes, laura marling, and local natives

// learned how to say “be careful!” and “climb down from” in latin

// watched the penguins go down in the 2nd round of the playoffs, and started my next season countdown far too early

// was given my very first DSLR camera, appropriately named dexter

// found out what chronic lymphocytic leukemia is

// watched a lot of dexterBSG30 rockbetter off ted, damages, mad men, the tudors, and united states of tara

// wrote a lot of poetry i’m actually pretty proud of

// saw my boys, the pittsburgh penguins, two rows from ice level, and two other times besides that

// maintained a good GPA + developed new academic contacts

// bought a lot of records, ballet flats, dishware, and bottles of nail polish

// had countless conversation about creative nonfiction + friendship + supernatural + hockey + psychology + the movie inception

// was lucky enough to see the swell season, bob dylan, hanson, and john mayer in concert (from pretty awesome seats, too)

// became OBSESSED with netflix (how did i ever live without it?)

// took hundreds of photos of coffee + tea, cemeteries, books, cats, shoes, clouds, and my little front porch

// turned twenty-two in my favorite place on earth: consol energy center

// reevaluated every priority i’ve ever had in life while spending countless hours in a squeaky, uncomfortable chair next to my mother’s hospital bed at the cleveland clinic

// wandered through shenandoah valley national park

// drank too many starry night shots + sang along too loudly to songs on the radio in bars on weeknights

// ate my weight in con queso, homemade risotto, and blueberry yogurt

// maintained such a lovely group of writer friends

// worked on being more flexible, brave, and even-tempered

// wasn’t lucky enough to travel very much or very far, but still managed to “go” to many new places

// gave into the smart phone craze, and bought a new laptop

// pinned down what i would like the next five years to be like, and started to make the right decisions to get myself there

// tumblrd, tweeted, and started a personal blog

// developed this blog into the super artistic explosion of random creativity + funk that it is now! (bwahahaha)

// reclaimed my status as the master of my fate, the captain of my soul

☁☁☁

i am already oozing with excitement to find out what 2011 has in store for me, my friends, and for all of you here. i am oh so happy to have “met” (most of) you all during this wildly unpredictable + wonderful, incredibly fast year. have a brilliant new year’s day!

midweek felicity: avocado eyes

i’ve been feeling a little off the last few days. between the penguins losing and starting summer classes, errands and friends and a late spring head cold, i feel like i haven’t sat down and collected my thoughts in a solid week. i feel like i’ve been walking around in a haze, been rushing from here to there, class // library // pittsburgh // grocery store // sleep…i’ve always been pretty great at managing my time, but not so much lately. i need to refocus. i need to plant some seeds to feel some dirt in my hands. i need to go to bed early and find my new morning routine. i need to take some antihistamine, have a hagrid-sized cup of tea, and let my mind calm itself, and become renewed.

here are some moments i’ve been able to live + collect + remember from this week so far…

The Stray Cat Sits

the stray cat sits on the little front porch
and tries on her name like a wedding ring
not lola, or precious
not persephone, or eartha kitt
but gabriel garcia marquez
fits her warm disposition
and her avocado eyes

she takes up court with the lily of the valley
a bulls eye in the consummate green
their tiny white blossoms like bonnets or bells
their curled edges like an old man’s mustache
like your maternal grandfather’s mustache
the one you never met

she watches the presbyterian woman across the street
with the denim skirt and habitual bow
carry in her groceries fast
to avoid the cool fat drops of spring rain
the blue plastic bags weighed down
by a dozen grade A eggs
hefty jars of classic ragu
and an apocalyptic amount of toilet paper
she watches the woman hesitate with the final bag
wrapped tight around a rectangular package
as though that salmon will be special enough
to light a fire whose ashes
have long blown away

she stiffens at the sound of the metro bus
a slow growing roar, a sudden hiss
a PSA on prostate cancer in yellow block writing
beneath a boy with a straight brimmed hat
looking out the window at the little front porch
with the cat named gabriel like a gargoyle
black and white and standing guard

into the shadows of dogwood trees

1 May

it’s the beginning of may and here’s what’s been on my mind

{at the start of each month i stop & take a moment to recount & remember the last four weeks}

:: smells. the moroccan bazarr febreeze in the bathroom that’s supposed to smell like a market in casablanca + fresh ground ginger, the final dregs of my coco mademoiselle {anyone willing to donate a new bottle? :)}, carmex before bed, the dark, pungent mulch on campus, warm biscuits, and dove shampoo

:: poetry. how much of an anchor it is in my life. how it is truly one of my most vital passions. how much i cherish it. how much mary oliver, galway kinnell, sylvia plath, and ernest hemingway are blowing my mind right now

:: the college of arts and sciences. that is, the physical building itself. how it’s my favorite place on campus, how much it inspires me, encourages me, and makes me feel like i’m at my other home. how much i’m going to miss it when i move on from the university of akron. here’s why ::

:: music. how much fun it’s been to discover peasant, the farewell circuit, mesita, annuals, and mimicking birds. how exciting it’s been to hear new music from old loves like hanson, jack johnson, vampire weekend, and josh ritter. how much i love putting together a warm.weather super playlist featuring the format + fun. + alexi murdoch + joe purdy + harlem shakes + jason mraz. how much music influences and touches my daily life

:: cardinal thomas wolsey. his character and reputation. his skills and shortcomings. his vilification, both fair and unjustified. how amazing it would be to go back to whitehall in 1525 and meet him. how corrupt and brilliant and conniving he was.  how much i’ve enjoyed researching his life and career for my final paper in tudor + stuart britain. how much i’m looking forward to meeting him again during my other history class this fall

:: playoffs.playoffs.playoffs. here are some highlights

:: acceptance. that i will

not being seeing john mayer or jack johnson on tour this summer

still be at UofA this fall, and not at pitt studying creative writing

always be powerless over carbohydrates + good cheese

always have feet that were not made for sexy sandals

be comforting my mom through chemotherapy much sooner than expected

never fully understand physics, parliamentary procedure in 17th century britain, and why people like jay leno

:: my space here. how exciting it is that my blog has gained so many readers in the last few weeks. how semi bizarre it is to think that there are people out there besides my immediate family and super close friends that are interested in my rambles and stories, my photos and quirks, my adventures and misadventures and my favorite wines + supernatural episodes + purses + moleskines + movies + tuesday morning rituals. how warm, safe, content, jubilant, accepted, and creative i feel here. how thankful i am that you are reading this right now

:: nature. how astonishingly beautiful this spring has been. how i’ve spent so much of my time recently leaning into the shadows of dogwood trees and cherry blossoms, taking in their sweet + spicy scent and trying to capture their beauty. how lucky i am to live in a climate that explodes in so many petals of color every april. how excited i am to explore the nature of autumn with my new camera when october comes around this fall

:: these forgotten photos ::

what are you thinking about on this first of the month?

cheers [darlin']
